Bishop of Technology

Will you join me (and over 3 million others) in signing the petition of opposition to the bills trying to CENSOR the Internet?

I am a Christian and I am opposed to stealing anything from anyone. However, the SOPA & PIPA bills in congress go too far in trying to eliminate the illegal piracy of online content.

I like things that are free – BUT, I refuse to download, copy, or steal movies, music, etc! If it is not free and I don’t want to pay for it, then I do not steal it. I believe that everyone should do the same.

However, the copyright holders and major movie/music companies have exercised FAR TOO MUCH leverage in the congress. Their (almost) unlimited finances have enabled their lobbyists to convince our (non-technical) law-makers that these bills are necessary. EVEN to the point that major sources of information such as Wikipedia – or smaller help sites such as RayWaldo.com could be blocked – without recourse – if unsubstantiated complaints are lodged by the large media (movie/music) corporations!

Even the Obama Administration has come out against this bad legislation — one of the VERY FEW things that the White House has done, of which I am in agreement!!

Notably, the mass protest has had an effect. The New York Times quoted Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, “This is the first real test of the political strength of the Web, and regardless of how things go, they are no longer a pushover.” And the ARS Technica website is reporting that 18 more senators announced their opposition to the legislation (including 7 previous co-sponsors!).

Thankfully, the number of lawmakers who have “jumped ship” includes the senator for my district, David Vitter (R-LA). He was previously a co-sponsor of the legislation.

It is now being developed and supported by Gtabcombover. I switched to this ROM last night and so far, I like it. You can download it from the XDA thread, GTabCombOver or from here.

Unfortunately, my GTab has bitten the dust. Until I get a replacement, I cannot give too much more information about this ROM.

If you want to check out this new ROM, (assuming that you already have a ROM/kernel based on the 1.2 bootloader), you can do it WITHOUT even connecting a computer…

Use your GTab to browse to this article & download the ROM file (see links above) & save to the GTab’s SDCard.

Reboot to ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) to do a full backup of the existing ROM & all data

Use CWM to do a Factory Reset and clear both the Cache & the Dalvik Cache

Use CWM to flash the new GTabCombOver (GCO) ROM from the Downloads folder on the SDCard.

Reboot the System, add your WiFi credentials, and sign in with your Google Account

Visit the Android Market and accept the terms

Leave the GTab alone for about 30 minutes while everything is sync’ed and updated.

Give the ROM a day or two of use and see if it meets your needs. If not, then…

Reboot into CWM, to do a Factory Reset and clear both the Cache & the Dalvik Cache

Use CWM to RESTORE the backup that you did prior to the process above

Reboot the system

Leave the GTab alone for about 30 minutes while everything is sync’ed and updated.

The process of recovery (above) will restore the original ROM, all Apps, and Data to EXACTLY the same point where you were when the backup was done. Some Apps will have newer versions but the Android Market will update them in the normal fashion. Your email, and online accounts will be sync’ed and updated as if you had turned the device off and left it off during the period that you had the new ROM installed.

Bishop of Technology

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

Mobile Voice Over Internet Protocol (Mobile VOIP) is here!

Last spring, T-Mobile introduced its “Bobsled™” VOIP service as an App for Facebook users. Due to some conflict in marketing, Facebook took issue and the app was removed after about a week. It was later reinstated but got little attention. Possibly because AT&T decided that they wanted to buy out (aka “merge”) their competitor. During the months of bickering about the merger, T-Mobile went into what appeared to be a “static” mode of operations. They did little to advance their technology or offer new & interesting services.

BUT… since truth and justice has prevailed and the AT&T / T-Mobile union is not going to happen, T-Mobile has awakened and started to be an active company again. They are beginning to roll out some unique services that will set the US’s 4th largest mobile provider apart from their larger competitors. One of the most interesting is their Bobsled VOIP service. On January 12, T-Mobile announced “enhanced and expanded functionality for its Bobsled™ by T-Mobile® service.”

The expanded Bobsled service is impressive. With apps for both Android and IOS (iPhone, iPad) devices, as well as support for Windows and Mac computer browsers, the service now reaches a LOT more people than previously (with only the Facebook app.) Also, according to T-Mo’s press release, the new service “provides users with free calling to any mobile or landline phone number in the U.S, Canada or Puerto Rico from inside or outside the U.S. from their desktop browser.” Another feature: free text messaging to anyone (or group) with a text-capable phone.

What is unique about Bobsled is that the service is provided (free) by a major cellular carrier! Why would T-Mobile offer a service that has the potential for reducing our dependence on traditional cellular service? I cannot assume to know T-Mo’s motives but I do know “The times, they are a ‘changin’.”

Long Distance vs Local – For too many years, we were charged more for a call to a friend who lived just a few miles away (in-state LD) – but was in a different calling area – than we were charged to call someone on the other side of the nation (out-of-state LD). Now, even non-technical people have realized that it is ridiculous to pay for long distance services. They are now using their cell phones more (since there is often no difference in the cost of LD and local calls) and their land lines less.

Mobile vs Land Lines – Many have now “cut the cord” and eliminated their land line phones entirely. Some are using their mobile phones for all connections while others are using some form of VOIP service (either via Ooma, Vonage, MagicJack, or Cable provider). This has surely eaten into the profits of traditional land line providers such as AT&T, Verizon, and (to a lesser extent) Sprint. Notably, T-Mobile does NOT have a land line service in the US. Therefore, this trend is not cutting their profits.

Voice vs Data - traditional phones operated by sending sounds over wires. Today, all conversations are (at some point) converted to digital data streams and passed over fiber, wireless, satellite, or (in decreasing measure) traditional copper wire. Wireless carriers have tried to separate voice and data charges. But, more and more, technology is forcing the elimination of such a distinction. Mobile VOIP eliminates the need for “minutes” and uses only the data connection. Carriers will have to react to that sooner or later. It appears that T-Mobile is more willing to embrace the future than other carriers.

SMS vs Free Texting – Let’s face it, normal (paid) texting (SMS) is a rip-off! It has been a “cash cow” for the carriers since day one. Due to the technology used, it costs the carrier almost NOTHING! But it costs the user $.20 per text – both outgoing and incoming – whether you want it or not! The SMS service has also been the vehicle for scams by third parties where you get charged several dollars (or more) each month on your mobile phone bill for some service that you did not ask for, do not use, and may not even realize you are paying for. Then along come the smart phone applications that do a better job of texting – for free – and the scam “feature” is eliminated. What is NOT to like? Again, T-Mobile has evidently realized that SMS as a technology is a “dead man walking.” Their “Bobsled Messaging” application provides the one-on-one and group messaging services – again for free.

Carrier Loyalty vs Subsidized Phone Prices – The US is a bit unique in the overall business model for mobile services. In much of the world, you go to a store, buy a phone and THEN decide which carrier you want to pay for your mobile phone service. This model FORCES competition between the various carriers and between the phone manufacturers. Carriers are bidding for users based on the SERVICES that they provide – not which phones they offer. On the other hand, manufacturers must offer phones with more “bang for the buck” than their competitors. But, in the US, we are forced to select a carrier and then see which phones they offer. For several years, anyone who wanted an iPhone (spit) had to subscribe with AT&T (serves ‘em right, from my Android-biased point-of-view). This is because the phones offered by each carrier will (normally) be LOCKED and only work on that carrier’s system. In support of such a BAD plan, the carriers say that they are subsidizing the cost of the phones. Indeed, if you sign up for a 2-year contract, you usually get your phone for about 1/4 of what it would cost on the open market – if it is even available. However, when I have visited other countries, I found that phones there were priced (unlocked) about the same as the “subsidized” phones here in the US. Google & Apple have both tried to break this model (with very little success so far). But at some point in the future, all of this must change also. T-Mobile may be helping this by providing these free apps on both a cross-platform AND a cross-carrier basis. Although T-Mobile provides the service, it will run on the data connection provided by whatever carrier you have. The end result may be that you appreciate T-Mobile more and your present carrier less?

Examples of REAL Change (from an article on DSL Reports) - users in Paris are now “able to get 100 Mbps fiber, VoIP service and a full television lineup for around $40.” Plus, the article states that users can have “a free wireless plan that includes 60 voice minutes and 60 SMS’s.” Additional minutes are $.05 and texts are $.01 for each one you SEND (evidently the received texts are free). Or, they can have “unlimited calls and texts, access to the ISP’s public Wi-Fi hotspots, and 3GB of data for … roughly $25.” Another article suggests that FREE WIRELESS is also coming to the US.

I have been using Mobile VOIP exclusively for almost a year now. Since last May, I have reverted to conventional cellular service only a half-dozen times (maybe 20 “minutes” total). The rest of my mobile connections are via an Android app called GrooVe IP. (See my review here.) For text messaging, I use the Text-Plus Gold application.

The problem of Mobile VOIP? You must have some type of data connection for it to work. If you are using your carrier’s data connection vs the “minutes” allotment, then you may not see any benefit at all. However, if you have access to WiFi most (or all) of the time, then you could conceivably eliminate the “minutes” portion of your bill entirely. This is what I did. In order to achieve a data-only plan from the mobile carrier (for times when WiFi is not available), I purchased the Verizon MiFi 4G LTE device.

Bobsled vs GrooVe IP – So, will I be switching over from GrooVe IP to Bobsled? Not now. Bobsled provides inbound calls ONLY from other Bobsled users while GrooVe IP provides inbound calls from ANY phone. And, although you can make outbound calls to standard phones with Bobsled, the CallerID appears from “Bobsled” at an unrecognized number. FIf you call someone who does not accept calls from unknown callers, you may never make a connection. However, T-Mobile has said that they plan to offer real phone numbers to Bobsled users in the future. This could be a game-changer. I have installed both apps on my mobile phone – just in case.

What do you think T-Mobile has in mind with this new service? Tell us in the comments.

The Logitech Revue (with Google TV) received an upgrade to Android 3.1 during the month of December. It also was “dumped” by Logitech who lost around $100 million on the device. In my opinion, they had it overpriced (originally $299) – especially for the feature set that it had when it was released in the fall of 2010. However, with the new version of Android, Logitech’s fire sale price ($99 0r reconditioned for $80 at Amazon), and a new ICS Launcher (that I side-loaded), it is now a pretty nice addition to my HDTV system. It still has some shortcomings but it holds a lot of value at the present price-point.

The video is (admittedly) shaky and unprofessional. I tried to capture it by myself (working the device, the TV and the camera at same time. However, it is valuable in that it displays the Google TV in actual use. I may try to create a replacement video later.

————————————————————————-

Photo Gallery

I have attached a series of screen shots (Note1) to show more detail.

Logitech Revue, or Google TV?

This review is specific to the Logitech Revue but I am pretty certain that much (all) of what you can do with the Revue, you could also do with the Sony NSZ-GT1 BluRay Player (with Google TV) at $218 on Amazon. The concept of Google TV is a bit difficult to put into words. It uses a mini-computer (with a wireless keyboard & mouse) to link Audio and Video from the Internet onto your high definition TV set. But it is MUCH more than that. It allows you to install Android applications to perform specific tasks that would be difficult or impossible to do otherwise.

Not only does the device include a version of the Chrome Internet browser to allow you to surf the ‘net, you can download and install applications for games, news, social media, finance, email, calendar, and other personal digital assistant (pda) functions. You can install apps to read & write word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet functions — all compatible with MS Office ™ or other major office software. You can synchronize your documents, email, photos, and music with your other devices via Google’s (free) cloud storage servers.

But, the most revolutionary (IMHO) applications are those that filter and organize the video that is available to you (RIGHT NOW 0r upcoming) and present it to you in a logical and usable manner. This includes both free, paid, and subscription shows available via your set-top box (DirecTV, cable, etc), the pre-installed Netflix application, and a myriad of other online sources. If you have DirecTV, it will give you full control of the DVR and other functions on the system.

The screen shots show the type of information that apps like Clicker, BuddyTV, & TV&Movies will provide. Click on a thumbnail to enlarge it. Mouse over the enlarged photo to see the note attached to it. Us the next/previous arrows (below each photo) to step through the gallery – or use the slideshop to see them without interaction.

Whether you have this device or not, I would really like to hear your comments about it. I will be posting more detail in the future – based upon what you have to say.

Note1: Thanks to Clark Wimberly for his post on how to do screen shots on the Revue.

What the Kindle Fire SHOULD be:

I consider the rooted Kindle Fire (such as mine) to be nearly everything that one could ask for in a $200 Android tablet.

In this review I will present a short instructional guide for rooting your device.

Rooted Kindle Fire

Why bother rooting a functioning Kindle?

The stock (original) Kindle Fire has some SEVERE limitations in the User Interface. Rooting the device can overcome most of those shortcomings. (Note: There are also some physical limitations with the device and rooting will not change that.)

The most prominent limitation is the inability to sync with your Google accounts. On all of my other Android devices, I can see and download my free and paid apps on the Android Market, easily view & respond to my GMail, view all of my photos on PicasaWeb, connect to my Google Calendar, listen to all my stored ‘tunes on Google Music – and much more! But, on the stock device, Amazon somehow converts my normal Google address from MyName@gmail.com to MyName@kindle.com and refuses to allow me to connect to my Google accounts.

I can use the browser to sign in to each of my Google accounts but that adds difficulty and confusion – and there is no way to link to my Android Market account. Until recently, Amazon redirected browser calls to the Android Market and sent them instead to the Amazon Apps Store. They have now stopped doing that (with the 6.2.1 update) but, even though you can log in to the Android Market (via browser), and you may be able to tell the Market to send apps to your Fire, with no active Market account on the Fire, those apps will never be downloaded. If you can find some selected application files (.apk), you can sideload apps (note1) to the unrooted Fire but most PAID apps will refuse to run without a connection to the Android Market.

Although the Kindle Fire is VERY responsive (stock or rooted), I find the stock user interface (UI) to be AWFUL! The Bookcase layout is ugly and not very intuitive. The wallpapers rotate between the 21 different wallpapers in the preselected set. Personally, I find that distracting. It is also impossible (or nearly so) to change. Widgets are not allowed on your stock desktop. (Note: widgets DO something – even before you call up the app – examples are time & weather display widgets, or constantly updating Facebook or Twitter widgets).

The Kindle Fire does not include a recovery function. Other Android devices come with some type of recovery function to allow you to flash updates. After rooting most devices, the ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery image is installed to the device (replacing the stock recovery image) and CWM is then used for flashing ROMS, updates, etc and for doing NanDroid backup (there is no similar backup on the stock device) and restore, plus other maintenance functions. The lack of hardware buttons on the Fire make the use of CWM difficult. Some developers have managed to get CWM to perform some functions but even that is “iffy” at best.

Finally, many of the applications that I like and use are either not available on the Amazon Market, or they are not “compatible with my device.” Example: Where is the YouTube app? Although I can sideload applications (note1), that process is less than intuitive and does not work with PAID apps.

What I did:

The processes needed for rooting the Kindle Fire are not easy to discover. There are MANY articles about rooting but they may fail if your device has already received the Over The Air (OTA) upgrade to version 6.2.1. Others are unclear or downright confusing – even for “techies.” Although some guides are video-based, they move through the process quickly, and if there is not a simple text-based checklist attached, one may miss something and end up with a $200 “brick.” Finally, the forums require that you read many pages of comments and try to piece them all together in order to get a working process. I spent several weeks searching for all the bits and pieces to make a simple guide. Only in the past couple of days have I succeeded.

The first step in the process was to download Justin Case’s Burrito Root application on my Fire. Most of the newer guides use this application and tell you to download the app but it is unclear what one must do with it. I used my Fire’s browser to go to the AndroidPolice site, download the file (onto my Fire), and then sideload the app (note1) and install it on my Fire.

The second thing was to download and execute the current version of the Kindle Fire Utility (KF Utility). This is a Windows-based program (there is also a version for Mac or Linux users). It is an all-in-one system of batch files to set up and use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) commands. You COULD do everything manually by setting up ADB and researching the steps required to accomplish everything. This would enable you to do it on a Mac or Linux box but — it is MUCH more difficult and the needed commands are very confusing. By using the KF Utility, everything is either included or automatically downloaded by the utility. The particular options and their functions are listed in the “How To Do It” section below.

The last (continuing) thing is to download and install your choice of apps from either the Android or Amazon Markets and then enjoy a fully functioning Kindle Fire! I recommend the VooDoo (Over The Air) OTA RootKeeper app from the Android Market as the first new app to install.

————————————-

What I like about the rooted device:

The rooted Kindle Fire gives me OPTIONS. I can use the device exactly as it was before rooting. That includes streaming Amazon Video and using the Kindle Book Sharing Library. Or, I can switch to the Go Launcher and the device becomes a really nice android tablet.

My Google Accounts sync perfectly! I can use the Android Market and all of my apps (free and paid) are visible and available – as well as the majority of all other apps on the Market. Some apps are not compatible because of the limits of hardware on the Fire (no 3G/4G, no GPS, no Camera, no Microphone, and no hardware buttons) but most apps seem to work fine. I downloaded the YouTube app and it works perfectly. I checked my GMail app and it works perfectly. The Google Calendar & Google Music apps both sync up perfectly with my data on the Google servers… and, as far as I can tell, all other Google apps work (unless they require unsupported hardware). Interestingly, I had to sign in again to my Amazon account but when I did, both accounts (Amazon & Google) sync properly.

I now have the Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP v2). The TWRP image is installed to provide recovery functions on the Fire. TWRP is a touch driven user interface (does not depend upon using the hardware buttons) to do NanDroid backup/restore, custom ROM and update flash, and other maintenance functions. It is activated during the power on process – just hit the power button again during the first few seconds after powering on the device (while the yellow triangle is lit). The full list of functions is provided here.

I like the Go Launcher. The Go Launcher EX makes the Kindle Fire look and act like a Gingerbread (Android 2.3) tablet! Although I still prefer the Android 3 (Honeycomb) tablet interface, the Go interface is much nicer than the stock Kindle interface. Just watch the video to make your own comparison.

I can UN-root the Fire with the touch of a button. I downloaded the VooDoo (Over The Air) OTA RootKeeper app from the Android Market after the rooting procedure was finished. This app will backup the SuperUser and root functions and then temporarily unroot the Fire. That will allow the Fire to perform all the specialized functions that Amazon shuts off when the device is rooted (Amazon Video & Kindle Lending Library, etc). The description of the app says that it also restores root if an OTA update removes root privileges (like Amazon’s update 6.2.1 did).

Unresolved issues:

There are some things that rooting does not fix.

The wallpaper on MY device still will not remain set to my choice. To fix it, I downloaded the “Rotating Wallpaper” app from the Android Market. (Note4 or Note5)

Newer custom ROMs are not completely functional. This procedure prepares the device for flashing a custom ROM. ROMs are available that can flash Honeycomb or IceCreamSandwich (ICS) versions of Android to the Fire. But all of them suffer from some non-functional issues (sound, etc). These will almost certainly be fixed soon but for now, they don’t seem to provide sufficient benefits to offset the limitations. This is not a function of the rooting process but merely a result of the limited maturity of the code released by Google and used by the developers.

Hardware limitations. As I stated before, rooting does NOT correct the limited hardware on the Fire (no 3G/4G, no GPS, no Camera, no Microphone, and no hardware buttons). However, both the stock and custom interfaces have managed to place soft buttons on the device to perform the needed functions.

————————————-

Problems:

The most significant issue is the distinct possibility of bricking your Kindle Fire. I spent about 10 hours of “concern” while I was attempting to recover my Fire after it got stuck. (note2) I doubt that it is very likely that one will permanently brick their device using these instructions but the process does include a “rough place” where one (including myself) can get stuck. Also, the process for fixing the issue is very uncertain and confusing – especially for novices and those who easily become frustrated. As with all such guides, YOUR USE OF THIS GUIDE assumes your full acknowledgment of responsibility for any problems that may arise. I will NOT be held accountable under any circumstances.

————————————-

How To Do It:

Download jcase’s Kindle Fire Root app (aka Burrito Root / KFR) and install it on your Fire (direct file link) (also available here)

Download the Kindle Fire Utility to your WINDOWS computer. (Version 0.9.2 direct link) (also available here) / There is a version for Mac / Linux available from the XDA forum or (v.0.9.2) directly here or here. (Be sure to read the read.me file, & you may need to install “curl”.)

On your Windows computer, un-zip the KF Utility on the root of your C-Drive. It will create a folder with the files inside. To simplify changing folders in the command window (if needed), I suggest renaming the folder to a shorter name (eg, “kfu” or similar). This may not be necessary since you SHOULD be able to do everything from the Windows desktop.

On your Fire, sideload / install the Kindle Fire Root (KFR) app.

Execute the KFR app and respond to each prompt including the choice to ROOT.

Connect your Fire to the computer via the mini-USB cable.

On the Windows computer, use File Explorer to open the KFU folder and execute the RUN.BAT file.

At this point, your screen should look similar to the following:

KF Utility Main Menu

Using the Kindle Fire Utility:

There are not a lot of instructions about this utility. The developer’s thread on XDA is here. I suspect that reading all of the comments in the forum would explain it better but I did not take the time to read all 520 of them. The following is my understanding of what each option does. I will continue my research and correct my mistakes when I find them (or when they are reported to me – your comments are encouraged).

Press “0″. Check the ADB Status – On all menus, you can press the “0″ (zero) key to recheck whether the menu’s ADB commands control your Fire. If the utility does not show that your device is ONLINE (at the bottom of the menu), then nothing will work. So, if the menu says “Offline” then you must fix it before you proceed. (First) Check to assure that your USB cable is connected to your computer and to your Kindle Fire. (Second) Windows requires that the proper drivers be installed and working for ADB to function. You will need to MANUALLY install the Windows Drivers. You do this by exiting the utiliity’s Main menu and (with the KF still connected via USB) double-click on the other batch file: INSTALL_DRIVERS.BAT. Then follow the normal Windows dialogs to install the drivers. When the drivers are installed, exit the install drivers batch file and run the RUN.BAT file again. Press “0″ again and if the utility now says “Online” then you are ok to continue. Otherwise, you must fix the problem with the drivers.

Process:

The developer says (assuming that the ADB Status is “online”) you can START with option 5 which will do all the preparatory stuff.

1. Boot Mode Menu - This selection will switch to another menu that will allow you to send some special ADB commands to your Fire. These options will force the device to one of three states: Normal boot; Fastboot; or Recovery. This may be required if your Fire stops normal functioning. If the utility reports “Offline” but has Boot Status of “4002″ (rather than 4000), then use Option 1 to reset the Boot Mode to 4000. Even if it SAYS “offline” it will still respond to the Boot Status change. Then the KF will reboot and you should be able to continue.

2. BurritoRoot - This gives you temporary root privileges. It is the STARTING point for most operations. The application must be running on your Fire for the computer to send root-privilege commands to the device. However, the KF Utility has the ability to automatically start the app on your KF – so you don’t need to manually start it prior to using any of the commands in this utility.

3. Permanent Root – This option will install the SuperUser (SU) app on your Fire and allow root privileges. Note2: This is where I ran into a problem. My Fire rebooted and stuck on the “Kindle Fire” screen. See Note2 and Note3 for my resolution. Actually, the KFU version 0.9.2 is supposed to have fixed this issue.

4. Stock Update.zip – This can be used to restore your Fire to the stock (OEM) status.

5. TWRP Recovery – After your Fire has been rooted, use this option to install both the FireFireFire & TWRP images which allow you to do the recovery functions of flashing updates/ROMs, doing backup functions, or other maintenance duties.

6. Extras - This will switch to the alternate menu for some additional actions. When activated, your screen should look something like this:

KF Utility Extras Menu

The Options on this sub-menu provide some very useful actions:

1. Replace Framework – This is the Google Services Framework and it is required for the Google accounts to sync. It is not present on the stock Fire and therefore, even if you install the appropriate Google apps, they will not sync properly until this framework is installed.

2. Install Google Apps – This will include most of the common Google applications (GMail, Market, etc) and the Go Launcher that can be (optionally) used to replace the stock User Interface (UI).

3. Lock Wallpaper – See Note5 for how to use this (and the Unlock) option. (Personally, I recommend the use of “Rotating Wallpapers” app from the Android Market, Note4)

4. Unlock Wallpaper -

5. Mount Read/Write – Most system files on Android devices are set to “read only:” (see the next option) during normal (non-SuperUser) functions. However, it is sometimes desirable to modify some of these system files to force the Fire to do something that we want it to do. Before you can save changes to a system file, you need to execute this command to change the status of the file to Read/Write (R/W) so that the file can be re-written.

6. Mount Read Only – (The opposite of option 5) This will restore the system files to Read Only (R/O) status for normal operation.

Restore Amazon Streaming:

In order to get Amazon Prime Streaming (and the Lending Library) working again, it must appear to Amazon that you are NOT rooted. There are several methods of doing this but the simplest (IMHO) is to downloaded the VooDoo (Over The Air) OTA RootKeeper app from the Android Market after the rooting procedure is finished.

TIPS for installing the KFU:

The utility does NOT install GMail and other common Google apps that can be downloaded from the Android Market. You will need to get them there.

If the utility reports “Offline” but has Boot Status of “4002″ (rather than 4000), then use Option 1 to reset the Boot Mode to 4000.

If ADB does not recognize the Kindle Fire (driver problem), uninstall the ADB Composite device if Windows reaches that point, and check the box to remove drivers. Then hit scan for hardware, and it will come back as “kindle” then just install the drivers. It can happen sometimes, its just a weird issue with windows.

If ADB still does not recognize the Kindle Fire, try manually adding the line 0×1949 & (on a separate line) 0x18D1 to adb_usb.ini file in the ~/.android folder.

If you end up stuck at the yellow triangle, in KF Utility select Boot Normal, wait for it to say <waiting for device> and then press and hold the power button 20 seconds until the fire turns off, then when its off turn it back on.

If you end up stuck with a yellow triangle, do not EVER unplug the Kindle Fire. Leave it plugged in. Check the windows drivers to make sure it isnt showing as “Kindle” again.

NOTES:

Note1: To sideload an app, go into Settings, DEVICE (the option is hidden – normally it is in Applications) & turn ON the “Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources.,” Then from your computer, download & email a file with the .apk extension to yourself. On the Fire, download the apk file (attached to the email) and use the Downloads app to open & install the file. Or, use the Fire’s browser to dowload the file on the Fire – then use the Downloads app to install it.

Note2: (The KFU version 0.9.2 is supposed to have fixed this issue.) During the rooting process (using the Kindle Fire Utility), my device got stuck at the “Kindle Fire” screen. It would not move from the screen and even manual ADB commands did not recognize the device. It would power down but when powered back on, it returned to the same screen. The suggested plan of action was to attempt the process on a DIFFERENT Windows computer. Since I normally operate exclusively with Linux boxes, I had to BUILD a second computer and install Windows, let it all update, and then go through the rooting process with the Kindle Fire Utility.

Note3: With the Fire attached (via USB) to a DIFFERENT Windows computer, I went through the entire procedure (above) again on the new computer. This time, when I executed the RUN.BAT, it still showed my Fire as “Offline.” I then ran the INSTALL_DRIVERS.BAT file and when Windows asked where to find the drivers, I pointed it to the KFU\drivers folder and allowed it to install them. Then I returned to the RUN.BAT and it showed “Online” again. When I executed several options on the menu,. Windows would beep and flash a dialog stating that it had found new devices and wanted to install drivers. I just ignored all such requests and continued with the Utility and did all the desired functions. Then, I just exited the program and that was it.

Note4: The Rotating Wallpaper app is kinda weird and not much info on how to set it up. I installed the app (from Android Market), opened the app, ADD Set, Type in your choice of name for the set, ADD a file (photo of your choice). I wanted to keep the same wallpaper & not rotate at all so I only added ONE photo/file. Visit Settings: Active Wallpaper Set – click and select your new set; Rotate Interval – I set it for one minute in case I want to add other photos later. Delay on Sleep – check. Click the BACK button and hit ROTATE NOW. Then it should set you wallpaper to the photo/photos that you added to your set.

Note5: Use the UNLOCK WALLPAPER (#4) function, change the wallpaper to whatever you want, then use the LOCK WALLPAPER (#3) function to make it stick. (Thanks to user Andrei.)

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

Well, I have to admit that the new MagicJack Plus device is MUCH better than the previous device!

I have previously compared the (old) MagicJack (MJ) device to some of the more common Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services (see here). In that comparison, the MJ did not fare very well. However, with the new MJ Plus service, the company has answered one of my most serious criticisms – the old device had to be connected to a computer running Windows.

The new device will operate WITHOUT a computer – after the initial registration – which must still be accomplished via a Windows or Mac computer. That is a very welcome change!

Price: MagicJack (standard) costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. The MagicJack PLUS costs $69.95 plus shipping and handling. One year of free local and long disance calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands is included with your initial purchase. You can purchase an additional year of service for $19.95 for MagicJack and $29.95 for MagicJack PLUS. If you purchase their “five year plan”, the cost is as low as $13.99 per year or $19.95 per year respectively.

Voice Quality: Voice quality is good on both ends. I have not done any scientific comparisons but my “ear test” says that the voice quality is only slightly poorer than the same phones using my Ooma service.

Potential Problems: The Terms of Service (see their TOS here) have some VERY discomforting issues. Here are a few:

They can CHANGE your phone number at will

They can BLOCK calls to selected numbers

They can TERMINATE your service if you exceed their estimate of how much you should use the service. (Their “excessive use” includes you dialing more than 50 different number in a day and using more than 20 times the “average” use.)

They can RECLAIM your phone number if you do not use it within 90 days.

ADVERTISEMENTS “may include certain communications, including but not limited to service announcements, administrative messages and newsletters, and you will not be able to opt out of receiving them.” (Quote taken from the terms of service.)

Bottom Line: If you purchase the device and their five year service plan, the total cost is $170. That equates to under $35 per year which is less than any other non-computer service that I am aware of. The only reservation is their TOS.

Bishop of Technology

First Impressions of the new Amazon Kindle Fire

UPDATE: See my new article here.

I received the “Fire” last night and this is my first – quick – look at it. I will be posting a LOT more about it later but I wanted to get this out as soon as I could.

This is ANDROID!

The first thing that I want to say is that this is an Android device. It is not clear which version of Android is running since Amazon has adapted it a lot. However, there is a lot of “future” in any Android device that is not locked – and some users have already been able to “root” the device. Don’t be surprised if there is a custom Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) ROM available for this bad boy real soon!

The display is FINE!

The display literally pops out at you. And Amazon says that it has a covering that protects the screen from scratches and such. Nor does it smear as badly as some other tablets that I have used. Finally, without any additional screen protection, it does not have reflection issues & glare like others.

Here are some quick videos of the event:

Unboxing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GDf97qgrOA

Auto-registration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRAtVZ25Up8

Power-on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLE4xCMXbkA

Apps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shG4RRXOqlU

The device is responsive!

The dual processor runs fast and is very responsive. There does not seem to be any delay and apps are fluid.

Problems:

The device does NOT include the Android Market – or any of the Google applications! This is a MAJOR problem. The GMail, Calendar, and Gallery apps are my most used. I like the voice-to-text and voice search. I will post more about this when I have answers. However, it appears that some users and developers have already overcome the issue.

The Fire is missing some hardware that I think it should have. There is no camera, no Bluetooth, no microphone and no external storage (SDCard). Also, there is no physical volume control and the onscreen control is not always visible.

Bottom Line:

I knew that the Fire would be proprietary (focused on Amazon) before I ordered it. Although I generally avoid anything proprietary, I was confident that, as an Android device, the Fire would have support from the XDA developer community. That does appear to be reality and I have great expectations for what is coming out soon. So, my recommendation is that if you are considering the Fire, you might want to wait a few weeks to see whether Amazon adds some more hardware (or reduces the price).

But, the limited hardware may not be an issue when Google apps are available and all our music, photos, videos, etc are stored on in the cloud. However, at $200, the Fire is definitely a good deal!

Adobe has said that they will no longer develop their Flash player plugin for mobile browsers. Instead, they appear to have (finally) decided to support HTML5. When HTML5 is fully implemented on a web site, Flash is no longer required. The problem is that ALL web site owners will have to switch to HTML5 and use it rather than Flash. That will probably take a long time. From an article on ZDNet…

Increasing their investments in HTML5 in general

Bishop of Technology

The Bible App™ has now been installed on more than 30 million unique devices around the globe.

I install this FREE app on all my devices. It is available for Android, Blackberry, iPhone/iPad, and Windows Phone. It is clean, easy to use and it never force closes! The only thing missing is that it does not include any commentaries. However, some of the reading plans include daily devotional guides (a type of commentary).

The YouVersion Bible interface has been translated into nine major languages (including German). But it includes Bible text in many different languages and a multitude of both modern and classic translations. Some of these translations can even be LISTENED TO via the app! The primary means of using the app is online (uses either your data connection or Wifi to present your choice of text).

Many of the Bible translations available on the Bible App can also be downloaded to your device. This enables you to read that entire translation without using a data connection. However, due to copyright issues, some are not available for download. Two such versions are the NIV (New International Version) and the NLT (New Living Translation). But that is about to change (temporarily). Here is a quote from a recent email…

NIV and NLT Available for Download: 48 Hours Only!

Some of you have let us know that you lost your offline Bible versions after upgrading or replacing your phone without having offline translations backed up. Most versions in the Bible App are available to download anytime. However, a few are not, so we reached out to our friends at Biblica, Zondervan, and Tyndale, and they have graciously allowed us to offer the New International Version (NIV) and the New Living Translation (NLT) for a limited time.

For just 48 hours next weekend—from 12:00 AM October 30 through 11:59 PM Central Time U.S. (GMT -5) October 31—you’ll once again be able to download the NIV and the NLT for offline use. (When you download a version, that means you can read it in the Bible App even when you’re offline—that is, when you can’t connect to your service provider or to the Internet.) Special thanks go to Biblica and Zondervan for making the NIV available, and to Tyndale for the NLT.

If you are reading this before this period ends, just download the FREE app and then use the app to download and install either or both of these excellent translations (plus many others, which are available for download at any time.) If you are reading this AFTER the 48 hour “window” then you can still use these translations – but only when you are connected to a data source. Plus, many other translations can be downloaded at any time.

For more info, please see the latest email from YouVersion…

Also, just so you know: Several other Bible publishers generously offer their versions for free to the YouVersion community for download—all the time. Check the list of available versions on your device right now to see which ones you want to download!

*What does downloading mean? Many versions in the Bible App are available for you to store directly on your mobile device. When you download a version, you can read it literally anytime, anyplace—even when you can’t connect to your service provider or to the Internet.

FLASHBACK Version 10.3 released on 12/07/11 – available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?7vd7n8bfd3y753w or here

INTRO: The latest version of FlashBack (HoneyComb 3.0.1) for the ViewSonic G-Tablet was released yesterday (10/09/11). Since I have previously used FlashBack (FB) and not very impressed, I was not the first in line to download the new Alpha 9.0 version. But I did get the file and flashed it to my GTab yesterday to check it out and see if it is now something that I can recommend. Although I am still doing some testing and setup, my initial impressions are all positive!

RESPONSIVENESS: In previous versions, my chief complaint was sluggish response. I could click on an icon and it might be a couple seconds or up to 30 seconds until it responded. I would not even get a “click” sound for that time. It seemed that EVERYTHING was dragging. I did all the standard and advanced stuff – even FORMATTED my GTab prior to NVFlash (250meg system) and a clean install. And every time, it was the same. The device might speed up a little after it had been turned on and in use for a while but it was never as responsive as GTabComb. Well, that is NOT the case with version 9.0. Everything pops! Even from the first turn-on, it was at least as responsive as GTabComb b3.3.

CONNECTIVITY: I previously found that FB8.0 would disconnect from my WiFi and refuse to reconnect until I rebooted. This was the most frustrating issue I had with it. I think that the dev fixed it in version 8.1 but I never tried that due to the lack of responsiveness that was not in the change log. With version 9.0, I have not experienced a single disconnect. I believe that the issue is resolved. USB connection is simple. Just connect the cable between your GTab and your Computer, press the “Turn On USB Storage” button that pops up on the GTab and you are good to go. The ROM exports both the 14gig (internal) “SDCard” and the 2gig partition on the internal card. Unfortunately, it does NOT export the external SDCard but other HC ROMS for the GTab also do not export the external card. Bluetooth appears to work. I have paired and connected with my laptop and with my Plantronics 645 earpiece but more testing is required before I know how functional it really is. So far, I have not been able to transfer files from my computer to the GTab via BT.

MARKET: One of the primary issues for the GTab right now is the Android Market. Google has made some changes recently and one of the changes may be to block non-authorized or unsupported devices from the Market. They had to hack a version of the Market to get it to work on some of the early Gingerbread ROMs but later version – and the HoneyComb versions that I have tried, all had perfectly functional Markets that could be upgraded without issues. With FB 9.0, the devs have included the new “tablet optimized” Market (version 3.1.5) from Google. It seems to work flawlessly. However, the ONLINE version of the Market (https://market.android.com/account?settings) no longer displays the GTab (as a registered device) as it did previously. I do not know if this is the same for ALL ROMS or just for FB9.0 since I just noticed it since installing the new Flashback. (Edit: It seems to also be the same with GTabComb b3.3.) This eliminates a nice feature but otherwise, the Market is fully functional – as far as I have seen. One WEIRD issue: Several of my apps (examples: ES File Explorer, ezPDF Reader, Facebook for Android, Google Docs, GrooVe IP, Opera Mobile web browser, Speedtest.net Mobile, & Titanium Backup) are displayed as NOT INSTALLED. When I click on one of the apps within the Market, it offers the “Install” button. If I click on that, it opens the app (that is already installed). These may be the apps that I had previously moved to the SDCard or something – I am not sure. Still everything seems to work – they are just in the wrong list.

VIDEO: None of the HoneyComb ROMs are enabled to do hardware acceleration to provide HD Video. Also, Flash video is not fully operational. With most browsers, embedded Flash video will display either all black or all white, with sound but no picture. With some ROMs a hacked version of Adobe Flash 10.3 was reported to work for embedded video on the HC native browser. It did not work (for me) on this version of Flashback. I have three browsers installed, the native browser, Dolphin for Tab, and Opera Mobile. I prefer the Native (Chrome) browser but most Flash video will NOT play on it. Nor do they play on the Dolphin browser. When I installed the hacked version of Flash (you can find it in the /system/data folder), it would CRASH the native browser when I tried to play a Flash video. So, I upgraded to the Adobe Flash 11 (version 11.0.1.152). Now, I can hear the sound but not see the video. However, Flash video DOES PLAY on the Opera browser. So, I default to the native browser but if I want to view Flash video, I have to load it in Opera.

CAMERA: Due to the non-availability of drivers, none of the HoneyComb custom ROMs for the G-Tablet support the use of the GTab’s internal camera. This is not a function of that you can fix by changing apps, kernel, or ROM. The camera simply will NOT work on any existing HC ROMs for GTab.

APPS: Everyone has their favorite app and want to know, “Will xyz app run on this Rom? Well, so far, most of the apps that I have tried will work. However, some have limitations. Here is a summary of some of the more “asked about” apps…

Netflix (version 1.4.1 build 262): Seems to work fine. It does sometimes autoclose when I first execute it. However, if I execute it a second time, it works.

USA Today (version 1.6): Works on everything EXCEPT video. I have not checked but I am pretty certain that this will be the same for all the other news apps.

GrooVe IP (version 1.2.3): Works fine.

Facebook (version 1.6.4): is Flaky. It works properly the first time you use it. The next time you call it up, it will keep spinning and never find the updates. If you clear the data, it starts working (one time) again. BLAAAA.

YouTube (version 3.0.15): Works fine in the non-HD resolutions.

Bible (version 3.3): Works great.

Google Docs (version 1.0.16): Works great.

Evernote (version 3.2.1): Works great.

Gallery (version 1.1.30682): Works fine.

Google Voice (version 0.4.2.36): Works fine.

SLEEP OF DEATH: I experienced a couple SOD issues during the first few screen blanks. I have SetCPU (paid app) installed and I have had to use it on most other ROMS. I set it up with the Min: 356Mhz / Max 1335Mhz. Unfortunately, the SOD issue continues. I did NOT have SOD issues with GTabComb (used it a couple months without issues.) I guess I will just consider it a battery saving “feature.” Note: This ROM uses a different kernel, previous settings of SetCPU may not work – even if you do NOT “reset to factory” when installing. Be certain to CHECK the settings of your overclocking app.

SUMMARY: I did some benchmark tests and FB9.0 did not fare very well (see results here: http://raywaldo.com/2011/07/gtabcomb-vs-illuminate-hc/).. But, my overall opinion is… YEAH BABY! — RECOMMENDED! BUT, there is not a lot about this ROM that is significantly better than GTabComb b3.3 so if you have that installed and you are happy with it, I see no immediate reason to switch. However, if you are using any other ROM, or if you are having any weird issues that you cannot fix, then GO FER IT!

HOW TO: If you wish to flash the new version of Flashback, then here is the simple process.

Download the ROM fromt our ROMs Download page for a link to the most current version.

(Step deleted. As of FB v.10.3, renaming is not required)

NVFlash to bootloader 1.2 (with 250meg system partition). http://raywaldo.com/2011/01/nvflash-for-dummies/ (If you have previously done this, just skip this step).

Install ClockworkMod Recovery version 3.0.2.8 http://raywaldo.com/2011/07/clockworkmod-1-2bl-honeycomb-on-gtab/ (again, if you have previously done this, just skip this step)

Use ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) to backup your existing ROM, setup, and configuration.

Still in CWM, select (with the android “HOME” key) “factory reset“; “wipe cache” and “advanced / Wipe Dalvik” (If you have been using a previous version of FB, then you may be able to skip this step. If, when you start using the ROM you experience weird issues, just return to this this step and then reboot.)

In CWM, select “mounts / mount USB“

On your computer, copy the ?????.ZIP to the root of the 14gig partition of the GTab.

In CWM, “mounts / UNMOUNT USB” & then disconnect the USB cable

In CWM, select “install zip from sdcard / choose zip from sdcard” then use the volume keys to move to the bottom of the list and select the appropriate .ZIP file.

IMPORTANT! When the flash is finished, use the back key to return to the main menu and select “reboot system now” – FAILURE to observe this step will force your GTab into a LOOP.

Follow the Android Setup (if you did the Reset to Factory) and enjoy. (If you were previously using FB and did NOT reset to factory, then setup is not required.)

As always, YMMV (your mileage may vary). Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

Updated Review

I have previously written about my gTab, a gift from my wife for Father’s Day. Overall I have been satisfied with the gTab but find myself using it much differently than planned. My one hope, to write my weekly newspaper column, has not materialized as I have not adjusted to the tablet style keyboard. That issue aside, overall the gTab manages the bulk of my requirements; I have had some issues, but also surprising successes. I wanted to share those below.

The purchase of Toshiba’s tablet case was a must. There may be cases that fit better but I needed one quickly, before a trip, to prevent damage to the gTab. The fit itself is not snug, and the headphone jack and charger jack conflict with the leather straps. However, sliding a Hilton Hotels Pen between the straps and the end of the tablet opposite the power switch resolves most issues.

I was having random lockups and repeatedly encountering what I know now as the “Sleep of Death.” After reading on www.raywaldo.com about these issues I upgraded to version 3.3 (BL 1.1) of gTab for Honeycomb. That helped with the lockups.

To resolve the sleep of death I installed CPU Master Free. CPU Master Free allows me to over clock the gTab to 1400 and set the minimum speed to 312 MHz. My gTab turns on instantly now.

By the same developer as CPU Master Free I downloaded and installed Power Tuner. This sets airplane mode automatically at night and controls other power parameters to extend battery life.

CPU Master Free has a widget, I centered on my desktop, showing the click speed, battery discharge rate, and battery temperature. Instantly I see how my tablet is performing.

Previously I wrote about several applications I use: Google Reader (RSS Feeds), Google Listen (Podcasts), Barnes and Noble Nook (for my books), Dropbox, and Documents to Go. I continue to use those but have added several other applications to my favorites.

IMDB is used to search movie and television show information. I use the application often to lookup information about old movies and shows, reading biographies.

Craigslist Notification is by far the most powerful new application I installed. Setup a search – for any geographic area and working like an RSS feed new items are added. For example, I am looking for a 1970s vintage Honda CB motorcycle and I live equidistance to Atlanta, Greenville, Asheville, and Athens. I am searching “Honda CB”, set a maximum price, and entered 125 miles with my zip code to determine markets to search. Currently have 8 searches running.

Pulse is a great news feed application to keep up with information. You can customize channels, and like an RSS feed, the data is displayed but includes a graphic and tagline.

I recently installed “Flashlight”, a useful utility to turn the screen white and use the gTab as a bright light.

I do not play games because I do not have time. However, I have a few installed to share the tablet with my kids. Air Hockey is fun and can kill a few minutes of idle time. Recently I installed “Lane Splitter” a virtual motorcycle racing game. It is addicting because I desire to survive without crashing.

Additionally I have installed a number of live wallpaper programs. I feel my gTab is personalized and really look forward to turning it on.

I wish a few applications worked better and continue to hope.

I had Netflix installed, a link from Ray, but have not been able to get the market version to operate with this latest ROM flash.

I wish Skype worked. Having the ability to use Skype would truly change the utility of my gTab. I believe the audio works, but my sound/echo test was questionable after the last upgrade and I cannot confirm its status. The camera certainly does not work.

Speaking of camera, the camera worked with CM7, but does not work with Honeycomb. I feel once that is resolved then Skype may work.

Every time I turn on my gTab I get a “Gallery” force close error. I have not determined if this is due to a bad photo or has to do with the application itself.

Clicking a YouTube video inside the browser does not generally work. However, I can watch a video in YouTube directly.

Overall I remain pleased with the gTab and at the latest $249 prices one can’t go wrong with the tablet.

Bishop of Technology

NO Sleep of Death!

Do you have the Sleep of Death?

Many users of the ViewSonic G-Tablet experience what is commonly called the “Sleep of Death” (SOD). I do not have such a problem.

First, most of what we assume is the SOD is probably the result of holding the power button just a bit longer than necessary to turn the GTab back on. With most custom ROMs, the CPU is overclocked and set to vary the speed according to other factors (need or battery condition). Generally, the CPU is powered down to 216mhz during sleep. When powered back on, it takes a few seconds for the screen to turn on due to the other activity of the CPU running at a very slow speed. When we continue to hold the power button down (waiting for a response), it actually triggers a shutdown. It is only natural that users assume this to be some lockup that is called the SOD. In actuality, the GTab is just powered off and must be powered back on normally.

Second, turning the max CPU speed down probably does nothing related to the SOD. Some users have suggested various ways to help with the SOD. One of those is to turn down the max speed of the CPU (or turn off overclocking entirely). That will help with lockups. When you are running full speed (overclocked at 1400mhz) under a heavy load, the CPU will heat up and sometimes lock up the device. That requires that you hold the power button until a reboot occurs. If you reduce the MAX CPU to 1200mhz, it will fix the lockups. However, it does nothing for the SOD.

To FIX the SOD, INCREASE the min CPU speed. I have mine set to ~350mhz. That will make the wake-up more responsive. I hit the power button QUICKLY and release. It still takes a couple seconds but it ALWAYS comes on.

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

Monthly Cable / Satellite Bill too high?

The term “cut the cord” is used to describe those who have turned off their land line telephone services – usually in favor of cell-phone-only service. I have done that but I used the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) alternative – Ooma to replace my home wire line phone (for more, see this article).

Like the Cable Guy?

The term is also descriptive of cutting the TV cable. I have had DirecTV for about 15 years. There was no cable service in this remote area until a couple years ago when Charter ran a digital cable. DirecTV is nice and I really like having the stop / rewind / start of my DVRs. But the cost of the service has gotten awfully high! And, cable is just as expensive – if not more so. But, what can you do?

Have any of you guys “cut the cord” and dumped your cable / satellite provider? What services, sites, equipment are you using?

I have had an account with NetFlix for the past year or so and started streaming video from there as soon as it became available. I used my Vizio BluRay player and that works well. However, it seems that the shows my wife likes best are not available via NetFlix streaming.

Recently, Woot.com had the Roku N1000 players on sale for $40. I bought two – one for the living room and one for the bedroom. One of the (reconditioned) units was defective and had to be returned. I got the replacement today and it works fine.

The Roku device is a small box that pulls video from the Internet (via your local network connection) and sends it to your television set. The N1000 can be connected via wireless (b/g/n) or with a wired Ethernet connection. I prefer the wired connection and the N1000 includes that capability. The NEW Roku2 devices have some additional features but you have to buy the $99 version in order to get a wired connection. Since that device also offers 1080p resolution (vs 720p of the N1000), I may purchase one the next time I find an extra $100 bill in my pocket. But for most viewing, there is little difference between the two resolutions.

What I like about the Roku.

The device allows you to easily add any of hundreds of available “channels.” These channels include an almost unlimited variety of content. Some channels are by subscription (NetFlix, Amazon, Hulu Plus), while many others offer their content for free (AOL HD, iTunes Podcasts, etc). Several channels insert commercials into the stream. This is understandable with the free channels but Hulu Plus is a pay service and they still insert commercials.

The NetFlix channel allows you to access and stream any video that NetFlix includes in its “Watch Instantly” library. At present, the “streaming only” service costs $7.99 per month.

The Amazon channel offers free streaming if you are a member of their “Prime” 2-day shipping program ($79/yr). If you discount the shipping and consider the annual fee to be entirely for the streaming service, the cost comes to less than $6.70 per month. Not all of Amazon’s video is free to Prime members but over 6000 shows and movies are free.

“Hulu Plus™ lets you watch hit current and back season TV shows and acclaimed movies anytime in HD for $7.99/month with limited advertising.” (From their site.) Note, there are two versions: Hulu.com streams ONLY to your computer at standard definition. Hulu Plus is required to stream via Roku but it includes additional programming and is generally streamed at high def, 720p.

The AOL HD channel just launched (July 27, 2011) and it is very good. The free service features three main channels of high-definition AOL Huffington Post Media Group content – entertainment, technology and home. Within each of those groups, there are many sub channels covering a wide array of content. This one channel could easily provide all the TV viewing a user might need.

There are hundreds more free or paid channels. Many are listed on the Roku Channel Store.

Other video sources are available via what Roku calls “Private” channels. When you sign in on the website, you can enter a private code to LINK to a 3rd party channel. Just Google “roku private channel codes” to find several lists. The list at http://www.roku-channels.com/ seems to be one of the better ones.

One of the best of these private channels is the iTunes library of podcasts (audio & video). Evidently, the entire library of podcasts is available as if you were using a computer or Apple device. Although I am not an Apple person, the idea of access to “hundreds of thousands of podcasts” is pretty awesome!

The quality of the content: Content from the paid providers appears to be current with some providers offering content when the DVDs are released or the day after the TV episode is broadcast. Free services tend to provide video from the public domain that is “classic” (nice term for “very old.”) The resolution of the content is likewise varied from high definition on the paid services to very poor definition on some of the free channels.

Android Remote: I found the Roku Remote app on the Market ($1.49) and I am VERY pleased with it. It links to the Roku via your local network so you do not need to be within direct line-of-sight as you would with an InfraRed (IR) remote. Also, it gives several additional features that are not available with the regular remote.

What I don’t like about the Roku:

I was surprised to learn that there is no access to YouTube videos. The service is still available via my BluRay but I read that Google (parent company of YouTube) requested Roku remove the channel earlier this year.

The quantity of content is too large to easily manage. This is both a good and a bad thing. The fact that there is so much content available (either free or with a small subscription) makes the device almost sufficient to “cut the cord.” However, I have yet to discover a good management tool to guide me through the mazes of the various (different) menu options on each channel. That is just to browse what is available. If you want a particular TV show or movie, then you must search on each channel to determine what they have available. Some websites, such as Yidio.com propose to link the shows which are currently available on the Internet with the website where it can be viewed. But, there is no Yidio channel on the Roku and it is not convenient to search on the computer, link to the content and then find it on the Roku in order to view it on your TV.

No live content. There is some live content on Roku channels – but not much. Some news channels (and home shopping channels) may be streamed live, but most of the content is recorded. If you want live content from the major networks, you will need to add a physical antenna for over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts. Such antennas are not terribly expensive. If you live in a metropolitan area, you may be able to use a set of rabbit ear antennas. For suburban viewers, an external antenna may be required. Don’t be put off by the “snowy” content that one received via OTA broadcasts of yesteryear. Today, local stations broadcast in full HD (1080p) without the loss of compression that cable and satellite providers impose. Bottom line: you will get a BETTER picture with an antenna than with cable!

Summary:

I would recommend the Roku N1000 to anyone wishing to start the process of cutting the cable cord. Although this device gives you access to an almost unlimited amount of content, it is difficult to navigate so many different sources. There are a multitude of free channels and even if you add all three major paid channels (NetFlix, Amazon, & Hulu Plus), your subscription cost will be less than $25 per month – considerably less than any cable or satellite service. You will need to acquire some type of antenna if you want to view live content but that is entirely free, after the initial cost of installation.

Your comments are always encouraged…

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

Today, the FCC released their report:

Measuring Broadband America Report Released

It may be of interest to you. Click the link above to read the report.

I have been a participant for several months and continue on the panel of users. The FCC provided me with a special router that allows them to measure the speed and quality of service that I receive from my ISP.

The report reveals the possible sources of the issues that users may be experiencing while using their broadband connection. It deals with issues on Web Browsing, VOIP, and Video Streaming. One interesting point from the report is that users typically do NOT experience a better or faster web browsing experience when changing from a 10 Meg tier to a higher (say 25 Meg) tier of service. The report also offers suggestions about the level of service required for VOIP or streaming.

If you would like to be part of the panel, they are looking for volunteers to expand their test. Here is a quote from a recent email:

We’re also looking for more volunteers so we can continue to grow the panel, so if you have any friends, colleagues or neighbours that would like to measure their broadband performance using the FCC/SamKnows tests, please direct them to SamKnows.com and we’ll try to send them a Whitebox.

There are no noticeable problems with being a “guinea pig” for the service and privacy is assured. However, I can see how important the overall data will be for future development of broadband in the US. Also, you get a NICE router (called “Whitebox” in the quote) in the process.

Can it EVER be proper for Apple (or any other manufacturer) to know about a security hole in their operating system, have the solution, and still NOT provide it to the users of their equipment? Both ZDNet and I agree that it should NEVER happen!

The Apple 3G is still offered for sale in some markets. It was in active production until June 2010. But in January of 2011, Apple stopped supporting the device.

Apple is aware that there is no way to assure security between the 3G phone and ANY Wifi connection. Evidently, this security hole was found in all devices and has been fixed for devices using iOS 4.3.x – but the 3G is not capable of running this OS. Therefore (according to the ZDNet article)…

There’s a security hole that means you cannot make Wi-Fi secure, but risk having your secrets tapped. Apple knows what it is, but will only fix it for later models. So, if you have a 3G and want to keep your personal data safe, you must buy a new phone.

I find this abhorrent behavior! It only solidifies my dislike for anything Apple!

Your comments are encouraged!

We are here to help "ordinary" people understand, acquire, and utilize technology in their personal & business environments.

Bishop of Technology

WHY would anyone want to format their Android device?

Wouldn’t that “BRICK” my G-Tablet?

Actually, it is necessary if you are changing the boot loader (bl) from one branch to the other (bl1.1 to bl1.2 or visa versa). It is also a good way to assure a good flash of a new ROM – the first time! It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are switching from one developer’s ROM to a different developer’s ROM.

Using this procedure is reasonably safe. I do not know of anyone who has permanently bricked a Viewsonic G-Tablet. Almost any mistake can be recovered using NVFlash. However, YOU are responsible for any issues that occur from following (or mis-following) this guide.

“WIPING” (or formatting) your G-Tablet is roughly equivalent to FORMATTING the Hard Disk on a computer. It is a very frightening thought – unless you clearly understand what you are doing. There are some better descriptions of the GTab’s storage elsewhere on the web, but here is a short, imperfect course:

NOTICE: Before you begin any “wipe” actions, be certain to remove the EXTERNAL SD Card to avoid confusion. Different ROMs refer to the Internal and External SD Cards in unique ways. The only way to assure that you do not get confused is to remove the external card.

INTRODUCTION: All Android devices operate on a Linux kernel. Therefore, Android follows the Linux concept of creating separate partitions for various functions. The GTab has several internal storage locations. The first is the 512MB RAM (where programs are loaded before they’re executed) and the second is 512MB of NAND flash (where most of the essential partitions – bootloader, system, recovery, cache, …) are stored. The main storage device is a 16GB Internal SD Card. This storage is divided into several main partitions (mount points): DATA, SDCARD, SYSTEM, CACHE, BOOT, & RECOVERY. For the purposes of formatting and general use, I have given some general descriptions of these partitions. For a more ACCURATE (and more technical) description, visit these EXCELLENT posts on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14229760&postcount=14 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15558724&postcount=12 (SINCERE thanks to rajeevvp for these.)

DATA: This is where downloaded apps and Android system configuration is stored. The ClockworkMod (CWM) function to “Partition the SD Card” acts on the internal SD Card. NOTICE: Executing this option will delete all files existing on the internal SD Card. The “Partition” function will create the DATA partition, which is normally given 2gig (2048) for internal storage of apps. There is an option to create a swap partition but, with most rom/kernels, it will go unused. So, we recommend setting the swap space to 0. This partition is not normally accessible by the user but is under the control of the system.

SDCARD: This is where you can store almost anything you want. After the internal SD Card is partitioned, the balance of the space (14gig) is given to user storage. It is generally referred to simply as “SD Card” but some ROMS use other names for this partition. Whatever it is called, you should be able to access and use it as you like. Note: After this process, this 14Gig partition will be empty.

SYSTEM: The System partition is where the ROM lives. This partition is on the true internal storage area (512MB built-in NAND flash chip) of the GTab and is normally under the control of Android and can only be changed by users with SuperUser (su, or root) privileges. The stock version sets this partition at 200Meg. Some newer ROMs may be larger than that, so our NVFash guide enlarges the partition to 250Meg.

BOOT: The “boot” partition holds the Android Linux kernel. If you install a new kernel, only the “boot” partition is rewritten. This partition is also on the flash chip and cannot normally be accessed by the user.

RECOVERY: Either the stock recovery or the ClockworkMod Recovery image lives here. The ”recovery” partition contains a separate, and usually different (and safe), Linux kernel and a mini filesystem image. This is a fail-safe partition. Normally, you do not have access to this partition except when you install the recovery image.

CACHE: The CACHE (both normal and dalvik) partition is under the control of the system but can be flushed / wiped with CWM. There is no loss of settings or configuration by doing this. However, it will add another minute or so to the first boot time after the flush.

So, to clean up the entire GTab, you would:

Restore the system to a Stock ROM Image (I suggest Tap-n-Tap 1.2-4349) using OUR “NVFlash for Dummies” guide. This process will clear (and, depending upon the options you choose, possibly reformat) the entire device and enlarge the system partition to 250Meg.

If you want to sell or return your GTab in the original configuration, this is pretty close. But if you want to make the GTab work even better, continue.

Install the ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) image (be sure it agrees with the boot loader version of the ROM. If you will install bl1.1, then install CWM version 2.5.1.1-bekit-0.8. If bl1.2, then CWM v3.0.2.8). The Stock recovery will allow you to install “Update.Zip” files but little else. CWM gives a lot more functionality.

Partition the SD Card (2048/0) to clean up the DATA and SDCard partitions.

Reset to Factory (using CWM) to remove any old settings from a previous ROM install.

Wipe the Cache (and Dalvik Cache) partitions.

This will leave your GTab with a Stock operating system (OS), the ClockworkMod Recovery, and all other partitions will be sized correctly, formatted, and ready to start fresh.

If you are going to flash a Custom ROM onto the device, then use CWM to execute the following steps in order to complete the “wipe.”

Under MOUNTS, select the “Format System” – this will reformat the SYSTEM partition and remove the Stock ROM Image. The SYSTEM partition will be empty and ready to receive a new image that you can flash onto it with CWM.

Format the DATA partition. This probably will not do much but it will assure that the partition is clean and ready for the new ROM.

Using the USB cable, copy your choice of ROM to the root of the SD Card. Just be CERTAIN that the boot loader (bl) of the ROM agrees with the bl of your recovery image.

Flash the ROM, reboot, setup and enjoy!

NOTE: I do NOT recommend that you use a backup program to restore your applications at this point. You will very likely introduce some problems into the system. It is much better to start CLEAN with a fresh install of everything. You can use the Android Setup’s “restore” function to have all of your paid apps automatically restored.
